What we do | our programs and services

Without literacy, it's nearly impossible to succeed in school, find and keep a job, or advocate for your family. The Minnesota Literacy Council believes every Minnesotan should have the literacy skills they need to fully contribute to their community. To see the impact our programs have on our students' lives, watch the short video!

We strengthen organizations by providing training, technical assistance and national service resources:

  • Tutor Training (Adult | Children's) — prepares volunteers to work as literacy tutors, classroom assistants and/or lead teachers

  • Volunteer Outreach — places volunteers with literacy organizations across the state

  • Literacy VISTA — expands impact and reach of community-based literacy programs in Minnesota through behind-the-scenes support

  • Literacy Strategies — provides consultant services to organizations in Minnesota and beyond

  • Technology Services — improves the use of education technology in Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs in Minnesota

  • Northstar Digital Literacy Project — assesses basic digital literacy skills of job seekers

We serve Minnesotans by teaching children and adults life-changing literacy skills:

  • Adult Literacy Hotline — connects adults in Minnesota with Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes in their area

  • Open Door Learning Centers — offers free English, GED preparation, job-readiness, computer and citizenship classes to adults at six locations throughout the Twin Cities

  • Early Literacy and Families — free preschool and parenting classes prepare preschoolers for kindergarten and teach parents to advocate for their child's education

  • Summer Reads VISTA — improves the literacy skills of K-3 children from low-income families
