Purpose: This writing activity gives learners a built-in audience and a way to share personal experiences through writing.  It can be a fluency activity, so you won’t focus on grammar, syntax or spelling, and instead focus on meaning.  Or it can be an accuracy activity, with a focus on the past tense or other forms.

Preparation Time: 5 minutes to assemble materials, assuming you have everything on


Purpose: To give intermediate level learners an opportunity to understand and practice correct adjective order in English

Preparation Time:  10-20 minutes

Materials:  large flash cards for sequencing activity (see explanation below)

Preparation:  The presentation about adjective order can easily be done on the board, by using the table below, but you could also create a handout if desired.

Purpose: To help learners better understand features and language of a writing task they will be attempting

Some activities using model texts

Purpose: a writing activity for intermediate and advanced level students to practice descriptions

Preparation Time:  none, unless you need to collect the postcards first

Materials:  pens, paper and picture postcards

Purpose:  To create meaningful dialogue about culture, while allowing students an opportunity to practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills; for intermediate to advanced levels, though lesson could be modified for lower level learners.

Prep time:  Approximately 15-30 minutes, depending upon resources available.

Materials:  Pencil, paper, a book of folktales or photocopies of a few folktales.  Visuals are helpful!

Use dialogue journals as a basis for a written conversation about culture.
Give students practice quickly responding to personal information questions in writing; also reviews colors and pen/pencil vocabulary.
Students help each other to complete a fill-in-the-blank during a listening activity.
You can reinforce correct grammar by asking students to copy a model.
Students practice "there is" and "there are" and prepositional phrases.
