Purpose:  Teacher guidance and support enable learners to provide peer editing corrections to level-appropriate writing (such as copying or fill-in-the-blank tasks) while developing their own critical eye for errors in spelling and mechanics.

What is a writing recap?

A writing recap, which is sometimes called an exit ticket or entry log is “and easy yet powerful way to get students to remember what they are learning while solidifying language and summarizing what they learned that day.”

Preparation Time:  None

Materials Needed:  None

Procedure:

Purpose:  to practice forming and writing wh- questions

Preparation Time:  5 minutes

Materials Needed:  A set of answers that can clearly be identified as belonging to a specific wh-question (what, why, where, when, how, who)

Procedure:

Materials Needed:  two lists of items in the classroom (3-5 objects on each)

Procedure:

Purpose:  A structured and supported way for beginning writers to develop their spelling skills while practicing vocabulary and writing full sentences.

Preparation Time:  10 minutes

Materials Needed:  handouts with a photo printed on the top part of the paper and lines for writing on the bottom half (see attached example below)

Procedure:

Purpose:  To help learners practice using correct grammar, and to develop proof-reading skills so that learners can become more independent with self-corrections

Preparation Time:  10 minutes

Materials Needed:  A short passage with several errors, or sentences or a worksheet with errors

Purpose:  To help learners improve their writing skills and practice grammar tenses

Preparation Time:  10 minutes

Materials Needed:  sets of comprehension questions (see example below)

Example 1:

  1. What was Ahmed’s job?
  2. What does he do at his job?
  3. Why does he like his job?
  4. When does he go to work?
  5. What does Ahmed do after work?

Example 2:

Purpose:  To help learners practice identifying and reviewing the main information from a reading

Preparation Time:  none

Materials Needed:  a reading text, highlighters

Procedure:

Purpose:  To help learners stretch and develop their creative writing skills in a structured formula while reviewing parts of speech

Preparation Time:  10 minutes

Materials Needed:  Class copies of the attached Cinquain PDF handout

Procedure:

clipart pictures titled think, write, pair, share

Purpose:  This activity can be used as a warm-up, to get students thinking about a topic, as a comprehension check, or as a problem-solving activity. It also asks students to use English to think, speak, read, listen and write.

Preparation Time:  5 minutes

Materials Needed:  Create handout with a notes chart for learners to complete, if desired (description in the procedure below); choose question that students will work with, based on your topic.
