Summer Reads is an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) program that brings literacy mentors to children in grades K-3 from low-income families for eight weeks every summer. Summer Reads members are placed in schools, libraries and community programs across the state to help children improve their literacy skills and fight the summer slide. With the support of an on-site supervisor, members serve in a variety of program environments. They may use the site's curriculum or design their own lesson plans; work with children one-on-one or in small or large groups; provide tutoring or bring literacy to life through cooking, theater, games, gardening and more. Summer Reads members serve in pairs at one or two placement sites Monday-Friday (daytime hours).
