A Weekend of FREE Events!

Totally Sweet '90s Book Launch Party (3038 Hennepin Ave S, Mpls MN 55408)

Magers & Quinn Booksellers is hosting a free '90s-themed launch party (think hacky-sacks, slap bracelets and Tamagotchis) for the publication of The Totally Sweet '90s, a collection of images and stories reflection a decade we're all (too) familiar with. Dress in your best recreation of our childhood style (wide-leg jeans, anyone?) and enjoy FREE food and '90s trivia from 7-9pm, plus a guest appearance by "Mr. Dewey" from Saved by the Bell. It's gonna be totally sweet, or like whatever.

Fixed Gear Classic (1700 105th Avenue Northeast, Blaine MN 55449)

This Thursday and Friday from 6:30pm-midnight (plus noon-4pm Saturday) watch elite and amateur cyclists from around the world race for free at the National Sports Center's velodrome (a giant titled wooden oval). What's the deal with the fixed gear classic, you say? Well for one, fixed gear bikes are restricted to a single speed and the pedals are synced to the spin of the back wheel...as in no coasting, no handbreaks and no chance to stop pedaling. If you need a second reason, there are lots of fit people whizzing around in spandex.

Pine Island Cheese Festival (Pine Island, MN--45 minutes East of Faribault/Northfield)

This epic celebration of all things cheese will be running all weekend (noon on Friday through 7pm on Sunday) but the events you don't want to miss are going to be on Friday night: food vendors, arcade midway, a pie stand, FREE 21+ street dance from 8:30pm-12:30am, and fireworks beginning at 9:45pm. On the other hand, the cheese ball contest doesn't happen until Saturday from 1-4pm , so you might have to come back for the talent shows, bingo, arts and crafts and a thing they're calling "the mud bog." Sunday offers a pancake breakfast (8am-noon), cheese parade (noon) and fireman's water fight (after the parade). Sounds gouda to me!

German Days 2013 (301 Summit Avenue, St. Paul MN 55102)

The Germanic-American Institute is hosting a FREE celebration of "Deutsche Tage," starting with the 8am Lederhosenlauf 5K costume run/walk (last year's costumes included giant sausages and a jogging beer stein). Cool off after the race at the Bicyclists' Biergarten from noon-4pm, and then enjoy a Sommer Party with live outdoor music, dancing and traditional food and beer from 5-10pm. If you're looking for a Euro-pop style dance party, head into the Ratskeller from 10pm-midnight (21+). Can't decide what to do first? The Deutsche Tage celebration will offer a mix of German bands, food, vendors and hammerschlagen and runs from 11am-5pm.

Northern Spark Festival (Intersection of 5th & Sibley, St. Paul MN 55101)

St. Paul's Lowertown area will host this year's FREE all-night art interactive, running from 9PM-5:30AM. Interactive exhibits will be at Bedlam Theatre, MN Museum of American Art, the brand new Union Depot, Black Dog Cafe and TPT Studios. Launch artist-designed rockets, witness a 10' bicycle-powered bat puppet take flight and have love letters penned on a classic typewriter by a poet and sent to whomever you want. Get to the event with MetroTransit's free bus pass!

Arts on Chicago Celebration (3501 Chicago Avenue S, Minneapolis MN 55404)

Come experience 20 art projects highlighting more than 40 local neighborhood artists at the Pillsbury House Theatre from 9am-5pm. An accompanying festival will feature such various interactive amusements as pavement painting, an urban/environmental nature hike, stilt-walking, screen-printing, poetry writing, collage workshops, puppet shows, an art pedicab and a walking tour of Wing Young Huie's latest outdoor photography exhibit entitled "We are the Other." Between 11am-2pm, take a quick art break to enjoy a FREE outdoor BBQ and music festival at 38th & Chicago Avenue.
