Professional Development Funds:

In addition to the literacy council required trainings, we also provide each VISTA member with up to $150 to use toward other professional development opportunities of their choosing. Examples include trainings and conferences (registration fees and travel), classes, professional books, professional association fees, and more. VISTAs should make requests to use these funds through our national service staff.

Training/Event Purposes:

  • Orienting and connecting members to services and information provided by the Minnesota Literacy Council and Corporation for National and Community Service
  • Giving members the knowledge and skills needed to succeed at their sites
  • Fostering positive relationships and creating cohesion among VISTA members
  • Providing opportunities for professional and personal growth
  • Encouraging networking, resource sharing, collaboration and partnerships across members and sites

Required Training Attendance Policy:

We expect that all members will be present at each of the required trainings and participate fully in committee/leadership commitments. All members and supervisors are given the dates for mandatory trainings at the beginning of the service year so that they can plan accordingly.

If a member is unable to attend a required training, they should contact the national service staff as early as possible to discuss the situation.

Travel expenses to attend trainings (mileage/public transit for all, and hotel stay/travel meals for those eligible) will be paid for by Minnesota Literacy Council.
