Latehomecomer book
The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir by Kao Kalia Yang tells the story of one woman's experience growing up in Saint Paul with her family after living in Thailand's Ban Vinai Refugee Camp.
New Routes to Community Health is a program / project based in Wisconsin that is using immigrant-created media (video, podcasts, radio programs, etc.) to educate immigrant communities about health-related issues. Media projects include videos and audio programs that discuss issues as diverse as H1N1 flu, sexually transmitted diseases, childhood obesity, and mental illness & depression. All media projects can be accessed on their website at http://newroutes.org.

Today learners wrote about things pertaining to their childhood. They seemed to enjoy this topic and became quite animated while sharing their answers.
French food
On Sunday I returned from an amazing European vacation traveling in France and Italy. While nearly everyone we encountered was extremely patient and kind as I struggled to express myself through pantomiming and my hastily assembled handful of French or Italian phrases, I was reminded of my students learning English.

Today we did a writing activity that incorporated new vocabulary words as well as geography.
Here in the United States, it seems that children learn about the five senses at quite a young age. Many of the adult learners in my class had not learned them like they are taught here.
We explained the word “route” and had the students list all of the cities they traveled to before finally arriving in Minnesota. No student had journeyed through less than three cities prior to reaching Minneapolis. Faizah had gone to nine.
