Activity 1: Order the Lyrics

Materials Needed:  A recording of a song, copies of the song lyrics cut into strips (find lyrics for free at AZlyrics.com)

Purpose:  This activity can be used as a warm-up, to get students thinking about a topic, as a comprehension check, or as a problem-solving activity. It also asks students to use English to think, speak, read, listen and write.

Preparation Time:  5 minutes

Materials Needed:  Create handout with a notes chart for learners to complete, if desired (description in the procedure below); choose question that students will work with, based on your topic.

Procedure:

Purpose:  For learners to develop discussion skills and practice citing evidence as they improve their reading comprehension skills

Preparation Time:  10 mins

Materials Needed:  6-10 text dependent reading questions on a handout

Procedure:

Purpose:  Reviewing a text in a small group setting can prompt learners to recall a greater amount of points and details than they would if they reviewed it independently. Additionally, turning the review into a fun and challenging game helps to engage leaners in the reviewing process.

Materials Needed:  Reading text

Procedure:

Purpose:  Fluent readers naturally make predictions about a text before reading. This activity guides learners through the process of making predictions prior to reading a text, and also helps learners to activate prior knowledge about the topic.

Preparation Time:  5 minutes

Materials Needed:  A reading text with 3 sentences from different parts of the text selected

Procedure:

Purpose:  To help learners build their familiarity with basic parts of speech and improve their writing skills.

Materials Needed:  Pictures from magazines or printed off from the computer. The pictures should be in color, and have multiple actions happening in them.

Procedure:

Purpose:  To practice noticing and using thought groups. Thought groups are when speakers break their sentences into chunks by pausing after phrases or to add emphasis to their speaking. Using thought groups in speech makes it easier for the listener to understand the speaker’s message.

Materials Needed:  Copies of a reading text

Procedure:

Purpose:  An innovative activity to help learners develop their writing skills and improve their writing focus in 140 characters or less!

Preparation Time:  5 minutes

Materials Needed:  index cards

Procedure:

Green grid with examples of pronunciation of -ed endings

Purpose:  To help learners correctly pronounce the final –ed at the end of past tense regular verbs.

Preparation Time:  15 mins

Materials Needed:  Class copies of Pronunciation of Past Tense Regular Verbs handout, a list of past tense regular verbs that the learners are familiar with (e.g. walk, stop, wash, clean, want, etc.

Purpose:  A super fun game that is guaranteed to generate a lot of laughter and gives learners a chance to practice writing in a low pressure setting.
