This free mini-conference will feature a variety of 50-minute sessions designed to give you practical ideas and activities. The will be sessions appropriate for 1-1 tutors, classroom assistants, and small group leaders.

Observing ESL Teachers in Action through Videos
Observing experienced teachers is an excellent way to acquire classroom management techniques and acquire fun new activities, but in today's busy world it can be very difficult to schedule in-person classroom observations. In this session, participants will watch, analyze, and discuss three different teaching videos in order to improve their own teaching skills.
Is This Text at the Right Level?
A text that’s too low doesn’t help students stretch their reading abilities. A text that’s too high causes frustration and confusion. How do you find a “just right” text? Join us to explore three steps to measure the complexity level of a text and an exercise to practice matching readers with texts and tasks.
Community Advocacy Toolkit for Volunteers in ABE

Looking for more ways to advocate for your learners outside of the classroom? Come learn about a new advocacy resource! Literacy Action Network’s Volunteer Engagement Committee has created a Community Advocacy Toolkit to help support volunteers as they advocate for their learners and for literacy. In this session, we will share the toolkit, talk about how you can use it in your own work, and share advocacy stories.
Participants will each receive a copy of the Volunteer Advocacy Toolkit.
Computer Tutor: Strategies for Success in the Computer Lab
Adults who are working on their digital literacy skills need lots of support! In this session, we’ll discuss successful strategies for tutoring adult learners in a computer lab setting. Session is appropriate for tutors who are new to the computer lab setting.
Creating a Strong Classroom Community: Classroom Management Tips that work for Adult ESL and GED Classrooms

Learn positive, community building strategies that make classroom management easier. If you find yourself wondering how to ask your learners to silence their cellphones, listen to each other, or participate in group work, this is the session for you.

Wondering how to keep learners from falling asleep in class? Want to get learners up out of their seats and interacting with one another and the material? This in-service will demonstrate techniques and provide activity ideas for increasing student engagement and participation during reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Flex the Text
Simply reading a story or other text is not enough. The more opportunities you give your learners to explore a single text, the greater the learning potential. In this session you will learn 10 different strategies to help you stretch a text throughout a week, approaching it from several different angles. Best of all, many of the activities are low or no prep!
Using Graphic Organizers to Teach and Review Text Structures
Being able to identify text structures (e.g. cause-effect, chronological order, etc.) is a very important comprehension skill for intermediate readers. Come explore some ways you can use graphic organizers to teach and review a variety of text structures.
Mentoring Students – A new Volunteer Opportunity Coming Soon!
The Minnesota Literacy Council is in the process of developing training and resources for a new volunteer role – The Navigator. A Navigator is a coach or mentor who works with adult students to help them set and attain educational and occupational goals. Come learn more about this opportunity and provide feedback to help us create a great volunteer experience!
Pronunciation Practice for Pre-Beginning: What Should You Stress?
While it is important in an ESL class to teach and practice individual alphabetic letters and sounds (phonics), it is equally important for students to understand how individual sounds fit into the larger word or sentence, including where to put the stress. This presentation will model one way of incorporating word and sentence stress into a pre-beginning calendar routine.

Come learn ways to promote a growth mindset in class so that learners and tutors can all be life-long learners.

Attend this session for a conversation with Minnesota Literacy Council’s Executive Director, Eric Nesheim. Eric will provide an overview of the current state of funding for adult basic education. Then he will field your questions relating to advocacy for ABE students and the literacy cause.

In this session, we'll learn teaching strategies for helping our students use a prompt as a guide to a good answer, rather than an obstacle. Recommended for those working with GED-level or Advanced ESL students building transition skills for their next academic step.
