The Naturalization Process

The process of becoming a U.S. citizen through naturalization can be long, complicated, and sometimes confusing.  In order to be successful, applicants must understand both the “big picture” of this process and details of each step.  The three key steps in the naturalization process are determining eligibility, application and pre-interview preparation, and interview.

Because naturalization is a legal process, it requires understanding difficult vocabulary that is not common in everyday language.  Teachers should help their learners prepare with a strong focus on vocabulary from the N-400 form and by providing ample opportunities for learners to practice answering the challenging questions they will be asked about their application.
