Dice Trap

Purpose:  A fun and upbeat game to review spelling, vocabulary, or reading questions

Preparation Time:  10 minutes

Materials Needed:  Dice, a list of questions or vocabulary words

Procedure:

  1. Prepare a list of vocabulary words if you plan to have learners practice spelling the words or using them in sentences. Prepare a list of questions about a topic or a reading if you plan to have the learners answer questions.
  2. Divide the class into two teams. Explain that you will take turns asking one learner from each team to complete a task (spell a word, answer a question, etc.).
  3. Ask a learner from the first team to complete the task. If they are unable to complete it successfully, someone from the other team has the opportunity to respond. If the learner completes it correctly, they get to roll a dice to see how many points they receive. The number rolled is the number of points the team is awarded. However, if they roll a 6, the team loses ALL of their points.
  4. Play until all of the vocabulary words or questions are completed. The team with the most points at the end of the game is the winner.

Modification: If you have a very multi-level class and are concerned that lower level learners will struggle, after you say the vocabulary word or ask the question, have the learners confer together as a team then answer the question through a designated spokesperson. Members of the team can take turns rolling the dice.
