VISTA Spotlight: Jon Kindschi
I am serving in Marshall, MN at Literacy Volunteers of Southwest Minnesota. My projects are an after school STEAM-ED program at the Marshall Middle School and an ECFE program for the Karen population here in Marshall. Since our programs are up and rolling I have been focusing on recruiting more volunteers to help with these two projects. I help lead the Cultures United Club at the high school, participate in the Young Professionals at our local Chamber of Commerce, and help with the United Way Success by Six committee. It’s hard finding volunteers in a small town so the few volunteers we do have are incredible and I am proud to say I have found a couple of them.
What's your favorite part of being VISTA?
Seeing the smiles on the faces of the people we serve whether it’s at one of our events or just around town.
What’s your number one suggestion for a fun activity that’s VISTA-budget friendly?
We don’t have many choices out here so I just go to the library.
What’s your favorite tip for making the most out of being a VISTA?
Have as much fun as possible.
What’s your favorite cheap restaurant?
What’s your favorite thing to cook?
Chicken wings because everyone I know loves them.
How did you decide to become a VISTA?
An old professor of mine had it posted on his Facebook page. I didn’t grow up rich but we were comfortable and I thought it as way I could give back to my community.
Do you have any funny stories about your VISTA experience so far?
We taught our ECFE students how to ride bikes one day and a bike officer from the Marshall Police Department was there and he crashed his bike twice. He is ok.
Do you have any good (brief) stories about participants or volunteers that you can share?
This year the students are in charge of getting in groups and making snack decisions for the week. At first it was chaos but now they take pride in coming up with what to eat and then to serve it.
Is there anything interesting going on at your site in the next couple of months?
Give to the max day is coming so we are excited about that. In the next couple of weeks we will know if we will receive a couple of grants we want, and next week we have a fundraiser at the Pizza Ranch for the high school Cultures United Club.
What’s your earliest reading memory?
My mom reading Dr. Suess to my brother and I every night. Sometime she snuck in Laura Ingalls Wilder.
What’s your favorite book?
Moby Dick. Well anything not Charles Dickens really.
If you could have any job in the world (other than a VISTA member), what would it be?
Tug boat captain
