Middle Grades Matter is a 2.5 hour workshop that focuses on the foundations of literacy that adolescents need in order to effectively understand texts and complete school assignments. The workshop is designed for classroom and after-school program staff, volunteers and community members who are working with students in grades 4-9 on reading skills. Middle Grades Matter provides a comprehensive overview of adolescent literacy instruction as well as hands–on strategies and approaches to use when working with students. Content covered includes:
Overview - Explore the foundations of adolescent literacy and the core standards implemented in classrooms
Vocabulary - Learn about the importance of vocabulary and practice key techniques to help students learn new words
Comprehension - Examine strategies that encourage student comprehension of readings and understanding of text structure
Writing - Discuss the writing process and how to assist students in drafting, editing and revising written assignments
